Available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, the current mission is to take on Godzilla and somehow make it out alive!
These days, my relationship with Fortnite is, well, complicated. I reminisce about its glory days in that spectacular first year. Back then, each match tossed both newbies and veterans alike into a whirlwind of chaos, hilarity, and unexpected twists with no bots in sight. That raw, exhilarating experience has vanished, replaced by encounters mostly with bots putting on a lackluster show of attacks. They’re basically just serving themselves to you on a silver platter. The game’s enchanting, storylike mystery that once invited countless interpretations has been swapped out for MMO-esque quests. Now, you’ve got chatty characters laying out the same old video game lore, with a parade of popular “IP” characters (ugh) showing up in the shop weekly. This shift has chipped away at Fortnite’s once-unique identity, turning it into a corporate mélange not unlike a Ready Player One scenario.
Still, something about Fortnite keeps pulling me back in. It’s one of the few games where I genuinely sense the terrain beneath my feet. There’s something so satisfying about effortlessly running, sliding, leaping, and scaling across its landscape. After a tough day, I find myself jumping in to quickly knock out three daily quests for some easy XP, losing myself for a few moments. And I can’t deny the sheer spectacle Fortnite offers, especially when it pulls off stunts that most games shy away from. Right now, it’s unleashing Godzilla, the king of monsters, to grace each match. I caught a glimpse online of people playing as the giant creature, and it looks mind-blowing. The scale, the raw destructive force — they’re portrayed perfectly. This weekend, I sense I’ll be spending way more time than usual on Fortnite, eager to witness that immense power from the perspective of a tiny human, sprinting for my life from a force that actually feels dangerous. So, if you’re hopping into Fortnite this weekend and find yourself morphing into Godzilla, and then spot me scurrying around like a frantic little ant below, please, don’t squish me! I mean no harm! — Carolyn Petit
