Sony’s approach to PS Plus discounts has come under fire from loyal subscribers. The criticism centers around a policy that reserves discount offers exclusively for new or expired accounts. This means those who maintain active subscriptions during sale periods can’t benefit from renewal discounts. As expected, this practice persisted in the latest PS Plus sale.
Recently, some PS Plus users voiced concerns over Sony’s offer of a five-day membership extension to compensate for February’s PSN outage. Their frustration ties back to Sony’s decision to exclude renewals from discount eligibility.
Consider this: PS Plus offers significant discounts during the Black Friday sales. Yet, those with subscriptions extended due to the five-day offer may miss out on the 2025 annual discount. It feels quite frustrating, and it’s understandable why many see it as rather unfair.
On Reddit, one gamer shared, “PlayStation told me I can’t take advantage of 35% off a 12-month Premium sale because I’m already a subscriber. That feels incredibly unfair.” Another added, “It’s wild that there’s no acknowledgment of loyal customers.” Some subscribers even reached out to PS Support but found no resolution.
While it’s common for companies to target new or former subscribers with enticing deals, Sony’s strategy seems to disregard loyal customers. It appears that a number of users are choosing to cancel their memberships to take advantage of discounts instead of simply renewing.
Offering a separate renewal incentive could make a lot more sense. This would acknowledge and value the segment of the market made up of existing, loyal subscribers.
