Invincible has quite the reputation for making fans wait, with a notable two-year gap between its debut and sophomore seasons. It seems, however, that the creators are now aiming to treat viewers to a season of Invincible every year.
As anyone in the animation industry will tell you, creating animated series is a time-consuming endeavor. When Invincible’s inaugural season wrapped up in 2021, many fans weren’t prepared for the long hiatus that followed before the second season’s launch in March 2024. Fast forward just a year, and season 3 is currently airing. While some fans have voiced mixed opinions on the show’s animation style, it’s hard to argue with the now shorter wait times. Talking to DiscussingFilm, Robert Kirkman, the show’s creator, and Simon Racioppa, the showrunner, discussed their ambitions for future seasons to drop annually, even if not like clockwork down to the exact month.
Kirkman remarked, “I think the release schedule we’re aiming for now is much more indicative of what you can expect moving forward, in contrast to the gap between seasons 1 and 2. Behind the scenes, we’re pushing full steam ahead with supervising producer/directors Shaun O’Neil and Dan Duncan. The entire team’s working tirelessly to keep the production line rolling smoothly, so we can maintain a regular release rhythm. While I can’t promise we’ll kick off every new season in early February like clockwork, that’s definitely our target.”
Racioppa chimed in, emphasizing, “Nobody’s just coasting here; everyone is putting in their all. We have a massive team, but Invincible is a huge undertaking—it requires masses of people, time, and effort to make sure we get it spot on. We want to bring it to you just as eagerly as you want to watch it—maybe even more so.”
As for whether an annual release schedule is ultimately beneficial to the series, I’m not entirely sold. To me, season 3 has a few shortcomings. Still, an imperfectly timed season is better than none at all! Plus, fans can take solace in knowing that season 4 is already in the pipeline, courtesy of a heads up from Omni-Man himself, J.K. Simmons.
