Sony has finally broken its silence regarding a lawsuit brought forth by former Bungie executive Christopher Barrett.
In a development highlighted by Game File, Sony has unveiled text message exchanges between Barrett and female colleagues at Bungie, which they argue expose a “pattern of misconduct” on his part.
Barrett parted ways with Bungie in March 2024 amid allegations of inappropriate behavior towards female associates. He’s since filed a lawsuit seeking $200 million in damages, claiming wrongful termination cost him the $45 million he was supposed to receive following Sony’s acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
Sony’s filing reasserts that Barrett’s dismissal was due to his alleged behavior towards “a lower-level, female employee whom he wasn’t directly supervising.” The company claims he initially engaged in friendly chats but then crossed the line, making subtle comments about her appearance and romantic interest, attempting to forge an inappropriate level of intimacy.
The filing even includes snippets of texts and direct messages from Barrett that were sent to these alleged victims.
In response, Barrett’s legal team issued a statement through Game File, accusing Sony of selectively presenting messages and making unsubstantiated claims to justify his termination. They argue Sony is trying to avoid fulfilling financial obligations outlined in his employment agreements.
Barrett’s lawyers contend, “It’s quite telling that Sony hasn’t included complete messages or conversations as evidence, and nothing in their response justifies terminating Christopher on valid legal grounds. Christopher is confident that once all evidence is reviewed, it will reveal Sony orchestrated a scheme to deprive him of his position and the equity awards earned over his 25 years of loyal service.”
