As the PlayStation 5 takes the helm as the flagship console for PlayStation enthusiasts, the once-dominant PS4 is beginning to see its sunset. Among the changes, one standout MMORPG is parting ways with its older generation version, though there’s a silver lining — players can seamlessly upgrade to the PS5 version at no additional cost.
## Black Desert Online for PS4 is shutting down
Pearl Abyss has officially announced that it will discontinue the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Black Desert Online. Fans of this immersive MMO have just a few more months to enjoy the game on these platforms before the full transition to current-gen consoles is complete. The shutdown for these versions is slated for June 26, coinciding with their scheduled maintenance. The good news? Players can upgrade to the latest version without paying a dime, and all of their account details and in-game purchases will make the leap with them.
“Don’t worry; your game data is in safe hands,” assures Black Desert’s Console Live Service Manager, Brian Choi, discussing the shift from PS4 to PS5. “All your account information and Black Desert entitlements will be just a click away when you’re set to move to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series platform. We know this might come as a disappointment to some, but rest assured, Black Desert has been consistently refined to deliver top-notch adventures.”
Reflecting on the transition, Choi elaborates, “As mentioned previously, despite our continued efforts to optimize and refresh content for older consoles, we’re facing an uphill battle with hardware limitations. These constraints make delivering the newest content a challenge. So, after careful assessment, we’ve decided that channeling our focus on the PS5 and Xbox Series versions will ensure a more stable and enhanced experience for all players.”
When Black Desert Online first hit U.S. shores in 2016, opinions varied. According to Metacritic, it garnered an average score of 73 based on 35 critiques. It expanded its reach to the PS4 and Xbox One in 2019, broadening its player base even further.
