It seems that there was almost a noteworthy crossover in the gaming world that didn’t come to pass. An insider has suggested that we were close to seeing a collaboration between two gaming giants—Halo and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3—but ultimately, it got the ax. Despite the excitement this could have brought, it wasn’t meant to be this time around.
Halo and Call of Duty both boast immense legacies in the first-person shooter arena. While Call of Duty currently holds the crown in terms of popularity, Halo’s name still commands significant respect among players. With Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023, the prospect of combining the strengths of these two franchises seemed more feasible than ever before.
According to a tip from Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope on platform X, Sledgehammer Games had envisioned bringing several iconic maps from Halo into Modern Warfare 3. Though no specific maps were confirmed, a visual hint pointed towards Halo 3’s The Pit. A map like that would fit neatly into Call of Duty’s style, especially for more intimate engagements. However, TheGhostOfHope followed up, suggesting Microsoft nixed the plan, similar to when they turned down a previous Halo x Doom crossover proposal by Secret Level.
While a Halo team-up might seem unexpected for some, it actually wouldn’t be out of line given Call of Duty’s current trajectory. The series has evolved far beyond its roots in gritty military realism, embracing a range of crossovers and cosmetic additions. Just think back to when they introduced Art the Clown from Terrifier into the game. Even though Microsoft turned down the Halo crossover project this go-around, who’s to say it can’t happen down the road?
With Modern Warfare 3 now in the rearview mirror, Call of Duty has shifted focus to its latest title, Black Ops 6. The new installment has been lively with its updates, and is teeming with fresh content and collaborations for fans to explore. Notably, the Squid Game crossover was one of this year’s highlights, featuring its very own Premium Battle Pass. Treyarch has also shared the Season 2 Patch Notes for Black Ops 6, outlining what players can expect as the next chapter unfolds.
For fans of the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 offers plenty to look forward to. It’s packed with a gripping campaign alongside a return of classic multiplayer maps with a contemporary twist, and even an expansive, open-world Zombies mode that’s a series first. Modern warfare is continuing to evolve, with the franchise remaining a key player in the gaming landscape.
