The recent God of War titles that chronicle the journey of Kratos and his son Atreus stand out as some of the PlayStation platform’s finest. A significant part of their success is thanks to the evocative scores by composer Bear McCreary. Recently, McCreary expressed his openness to returning for future projects with Santa Monica Studio if the need arises.
In a discussion about his works, McCreary explained that his musical journey with the God of War series, including the 2018 game, God of War Ragnarok, and the God of War Valhalla DLC, now feels “complete.” In a recent interview, he shared how composing for the DLC’s concluding scene held particular significance for him, serving as a symbolic farewell to the series.
Reflecting on his visit to the God of War 20th Anniversary Retrospective Gallery, McCreary said, “Seeing the sheet music from God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok displayed, with my signed scores framed on the walls, made me realize the impact of my contributions.” He further reminisced, “Scoring the final cinematic for the Valhalla DLC was deeply meaningful. It marked a closure to Kratos’ saga, and I feel like I’ve completed my story, beginning from E3 2016 all the way to Valhalla.”
While McCreary considers the Valhalla DLC as the culmination of his current journey with the series, he’s not ruling out returning to collaborate with Santa Monica Studio. “If they find themselves needing music in the future, they know how to reach me,” he mentioned. “Everyone knows how to get in touch, and I’m really proud of the work I’ve done.”
