Genshin Impact recently experienced a notable decline in its February revenue, marking a 74% decrease compared to January’s performance. This downturn is largely attributed to its current banner schedule. The game, which thrives on a gacha system, relies heavily on these banners for generating income.
In Genshin Impact, the Limited Character Banner is a significant draw for players, often featuring new characters. With each update, particularly since the Natlan region’s introduction, HoYoverse has rolled out a fresh character. Their latest addition, Mizuki, didn’t quite capture the community’s attention as some of the previous characters have. Typically, updates come in two cycles, each featuring two limited five-star characters and a selection of four-star units.
A chart recently posted on the Genshin Impact subreddit highlights mobile game revenues for February. Based on Sensor Tower data, Genshin Impact earned around $26 million in that month, a stark contrast to the $99 million from January. January’s figures were buoyed by two fan-favorite characters, Mavuika and Citlali. Meanwhile, February saw the pace of new content slow as the game shifted focus from the storyline centered in Natlan.
With the launch of the second half of Version 5.3, players had the chance to revisit Liyue for the Lantern Rite Festival, celebrating the new year. The subsequent update, Version 5.4, brought players back to Inazuma and introduced a new five-star character from the Electro nation. Although Mizuki has been praised for her strength in support roles, many players opted to skip her banner.
In comparison, Honkai Star Rail, another popular HoYoverse title, also experienced a slight dip in revenue—from $51 million in January to $47 million in February. However, Genshin Impact could see a resurgence in sales this month as the next update promises new draws for players. The forthcoming update phase will debut Lady Furina, a highly anticipated character, alongside Wriothesley from Fontaine, who will feature in his first rerun banner.
Looking ahead, Version 5.5 is set to launch in late March and has the potential to revitalize sales. HoYoverse has announced the addition of two new characters—Varesa and Iansan—with Iansan expected as a four-star and Varesa as a five-star, likely headlining the new version’s first banner, following the typical update pattern.
