Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X PCs are now welcoming a fresh addition to their app arsenal: Google Drive for Desktop. Initially surfacing as a beta version back in November 2024, this Arm64-based app has finally waved goodbye to its trial phase and is ready for everyone to download.
On its blog, Google has highlighted that the much-loved cloud storage service, akin to Microsoft’s OneDrive, is now up for grabs by Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual Subscribers, and even those with regular Google accounts. Starting today, the rollout begins, though you might be in for a wait of up to 15 days as it gradually becomes available to all.
For those who were savvy enough to enroll in the Google Drive (Arm64) beta, good news: the transition to the full public release is seamless. No need to reinstall or start over; your device will update automatically. If you’re using a Qualcomm-based laptop, simply make your way to Google’s Drive page and grab the app.
The Long-Awaited Arrival of Google Drive
Even though Qualcomm and its partners have skillfully ensured most of the top apps work smoothly on Arm64-using Snapdragon X PCs, getting Google’s Drive app to run without emulation was a persistent challenge. This app is essential for those deeply embedded in Google Workspace, especially in workplaces where cloud service access isn’t optional.
Although the beta release last year signaled progress, it required a bit of hunting to find, as Google didn’t exactly flash it in neon lights (unless, of course, you stumbled across my articles).
Google Drive’s popularity is no surprise, given its ability to store everything from files and documents to photos and videos. Accessible from any internet-connected device, it offers features like:
- Storage Options: Enjoy 15 GB of free storage across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos, with the option to upgrade via Google One.
- Collaboration Tools: Seamlessly integrated with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, allowing for real-time collaboration.
- Easy Sharing: Effortlessly share files and folders through links or specific permissions.
- Automatic Backup: Safeguard your files and folders with automatic backups.
With this latest development, those considering a switch to Qualcomm-based Windows laptops have one less worry. In our experience, these laptops often have the edge over Intel when it comes to power, efficiency, and price.
In recent months, other significant apps have joined the Arm64 family, including Telegram, the Vivaldi browser, Davinci Resolve, Adobe Illustrator, and Slack. You can check out our rundown of the best Windows on Arm apps for more insight.
Qualcomm’s dedicated page keeps track of the growing list of major Arm64-compatible apps. As of Microsoft’s research, a hefty 90% of app usage minutes today involve native versions. While there may be a few stragglers, most users should find Snapdragon X PCs a solid choice in 2025.
In another move, Qualcomm has launched a beta program for graphics drivers tailored to Snapdragon X Elite laptops. These drivers promise enhanced video gaming experiences, improvements on current games, and general system upgrades. Although it will eventually be available via Windows Update, enthusiasts might want to sign up early for immediate enhancements and broader compatibility.
