With the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 8, Larian has wrapped up its journey with this RPG installment. While the studio may continue to roll out bug fixes over time, they’ve made it clear that patch 8 concludes the additional content for this Dungeons & Dragons game. Larian is now shifting its full focus to future projects, as they’re working on two new video games simultaneously. Though we may have a bit of a wait ahead for these new ventures, Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, assures us that development is progressing smoothly.
Currently, the specifics of Larian’s next projects are under wraps. The studio initially began working on a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 but decided to pivot towards something entirely new. Personally, I’m hoping at least one of Larian’s upcoming RPGs ventures into the realm of science fiction, as it would be exciting to see the studio apply its rich fantasy expertise in a fresh direction.
Whatever Larian is concocting, Vincke is confident it’ll rival or even surpass the scale of BG3.
In a recent chat with GameSpot, Vincke shared, “We’re deep in the trenches working on our next big thing. It’s coming together nicely, but it’s incredibly ambitious with so many new possibilities these days—it’s quite complex.”
He also mentioned the challenge of developing two games at once. “We’ve openly discussed that we’re working on two titles, and organizing ourselves for that isn’t straightforward because of the intricate nature of our games, filled with plenty of player choices and outcomes. Pinpointing when these will be ready is quite the task.”
Vincke notes that Larian isn’t looking to significantly expand its team but rather intends to strategically utilize its developers across both projects. However, with two major games in progress, the path forward isn’t exactly clear-cut. We’ll have to wait and see which game they decide to unveil first.
