Warner Bros. Games dropped a big announcement on Friday: the upcoming season of MultiVersus will be its last. The company is wrapping up development on the crossover fighting game, and by May 30, when Season 5 wraps up, the online servers will go dark.
Even though the online component is being shut down, fear not, as MultiVersus will still be accessible offline for local play or against AI opponents. Mark your calendars, because from May 30 at 9 a.m. PDT, you won’t be able to download the game anymore. They’ve already phased out real-money transactions, so players can no longer buy the in-game currency, Gleamium.
As we gear up for the final season, fans can look forward to two exciting new characters joining the fight: Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. And the best part? You can unlock all the Season 5 goodies, including these characters, just by playing the game. Set to kick off on February 4, the last season is shaping up to be a memorable one.
In a heartfelt message, WB Games expressed gratitude to their dedicated players: “To everyone who’s played or supported MultiVersus, thank you. The teams at Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games have been truly passionate about this project. We’ll always cherish the amazing support of the MultiVersus community.”
Remember July 2022? That’s when MultiVersus first launched in an open beta, courtesy of Warner Bros. and Player First Games. Fast forward a year, and they took it offline to fine-tune aspects like netcode, matchmaking, and progression, plus roll out fresh characters, maps, and modes. The game made a big comeback in May 2024, with a slew of updates and characters. However, not all changes resonated with the community, and after starting strong twice, the buzz appeared to wane, if you go by Steam Charts and Twitch viewership stats.
By the end of the fifth season, MultiVersus will boast an impressive lineup of 35 characters, featuring iconic figures from movies, TV shows, and comics. Think Batman, Superman, Rick and Morty, Scooby Doo’s Shaggy and Velma, as well as Tom and Jerry, just to name a few. Since its 2024 relaunch, the game added and expanded the roster further with characters like Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees, Agent Smith from The Matrix, the Powerpuff Girls, and Beetlejuice.
Even though it’s the end of an era, MultiVersus remains free to play and available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, until the cutoff date.
