Firaxis just dropped some exciting news for fans of Civilization 7, revealing what’s coming in the next update—and it promises to be a game-changer. By addressing some of the biggest player gripes, this patch not only extends gameplay past the Modern Age but also reintroduces the beloved Team Multiplayer mode from previous Civilization games.
Civilization 7 has already made waves as a daring addition to the series, breaking down games into three distinct ages and cutting back on overwhelming micromanagement. Despite its bold approach, not all ideas hit the mark with players initially, leading to some frustration. But with the arrival of the 1.2 update later this month, there’s good reason to believe that Firaxis is about to win players over.
Among the long-awaited features is the return of “One More Turn.” Although the game traditionally crowns a victor at the close of the Modern Age, this feature allows players to continue playing, aiming for outright dominance or meeting other victory conditions. Essentially, it opens the door to endless gameplay. Firaxis is also exploring the possibility of introducing this feature to individual ages, like Antiquity and Exploration, for games that never have to end.
Team Multiplayer is another highlight of the 1.2 update. This cherished mode from Civ 6 makes its comeback, letting players advance their civilizations in tandem with a friend against a rival team. Victory for one means victory for all, making it a strategic delight for competitive players.
One major player complaint has been the repetitive nature of map generation and resource placement, which felt a bit dull. Firaxis plans to shake things up with ten new additions and a more dynamic resource generation system. “Key resources for each Age remain guaranteed, supporting progress along civilization unlocks and the Economic Legacy Path,” notes the developer. However, the variability in resources should lead to unique exploration, trade, and strategic opportunities from game to game.
Also fresh in this update is the Hemisphere Identity system, which fixes specific resources to distinct map areas. Together, these resource changes are set to inject much-needed unpredictability and variety, elevating the overall gameplay experience. The maps have seen improvements before, but this could raise the bar even further.
Additionally, update 1.2 will make food a critical component in the late game, reduce overwhelming natural disasters, and include a ‘Repair All’ feature to streamline management further.
Mark your calendar for Tuesday, April 22, when Civilization 7 update 1.2 is set to launch. For a deeper dive into what’s coming, check out Firaxis’ comprehensive update primer.
Firaxis has also reassured fans that they’re hard at work on other eagerly awaited features, though some won’t make it into this patch. Future updates aim to include Steam Workshop support, an auto-explore feature, expanded game setup options, and a variety of new map types and sizes.
