NVIDIA recently unveiled their collaboration with Nintendo in developing a custom processor for the Nintendo Switch 2. According to NVIDIA, this new console boasts graphics capabilities that are ten times more powerful than those of the original Nintendo Switch.
The heart of this performance leap lies in a NVIDIA GPU, specially equipped with dedicated RT (Ray Tracing) Cores and Tensor Cores. These advancements collectively ensure breathtaking visuals and innovative AI-driven enhancements. Tensor Cores specifically enhance AI-powered graphics while maintaining energy efficiency, while the RT Cores contribute to realistic in-game experiences by enabling dynamic lighting and lifelike reflections.
Players using Handheld Mode can look forward to an “ultra-smooth, tear-free gameplay” experience, a benefit of NVIDIA G-SYNC technology, which supports variable refresh rates.
NVIDIA shared this in a recent blog post, highlighting the monumental effort involved in the Nintendo Switch 2’s development: “With 1,000 engineer-years of effort across every element — from system and chip design to a custom GPU, application programming interfaces (APIs) and world-class development tools — the Nintendo Switch 2 brings major upgrades.”
The console is capable of delivering resolutions of up to 4K when docked in TV mode and achieving up to 120 frames per second at 1080p in handheld mode. It also supports high dynamic range (HDR) and leverages AI upscaling to sharpen visuals and ensure smooth gameplay.
NVIDIA further elaborates on the console’s features: “The new RT Cores bring real-time ray tracing, delivering lifelike lighting, reflections, and shadows for more immersive worlds.”
Meanwhile, Tensor Cores serve a dual purpose. They empower AI-driven features such as Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), elevating resolution and enhancing detail without compromising image quality. Additionally, the Tensor Cores make room for AI-powered face tracking and background removal in video chat scenarios, enriching social gaming and streaming experiences.
Gamers can anticipate the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, when it will arrive at retailers worldwide. It will be priced at £395.99 in the UK and $449.99 in the US.
