The latest buzz from the gaming world is about “Over the Hill,” an upcoming off-roading game brought to life by Funselektor, the minds behind Absolute Drift and Art of Rally, along with Strelka Games. The first gameplay trailer just premiered at today’s Triple-i Initiative indie showcase, and it has fans buzzing.
Originally announced in January, this game takes Funselektor’s trademark minimalist art style and applies it to an environment reminiscent of SnowRunner, minus the hassle of hauling trailers. And just to clarify, we’re not talking game trailers, but the kind you attach to vehicles—though “Over the Hill” certainly seems to enjoy playing with both.
So far, even without a set release date, the game has managed to capture significant attention, amassing over 200,000 wishlists on Steam. The trailer assures us there’ll be plenty of classic off-road challenges—think mud, winches, and rugged terrain—without the real-life headaches or expenses of maintaining a Land Rover perpetually on the brink of a breakdown.
The game offers multiplayer fun, allowing up to four players to explore scenic routes in vintage off-roaders from the 1960s to 1980s. It’s a clear nod to Funselektor’s love of retro motorsport, but this time, players tackle a full array of seasonal and weather conditions, making for dynamic gameplay.
The user interface is refreshingly simple, with a mini-map modeled after old-school Ordnance Survey maps—reminiscent of those a parent might wrestle with in the car. The winch mechanics were given center stage, and for those familiar with SnowRunner, they’ll find a comforting familiarity in picking a point and reeling it in.
Customization features let players tweak vehicles for optimal performance in sticky situations. Plus, there’s a photo mode to capture those triumphant or not-so-triumphant moments, like reaching a mountain’s peak or capturing an epic tumble down its side.
