Blizzard is in hot water with Overwatch 2 players after they announced that a premium Lucio skin sold in their store would soon be available for free through Twitch. This unexpected move has not sat well with many fans, who were already discontent with the game, especially when compared to the more competitive Marvel Rivals.
Overwatch 2 is under fire due to its handling of in-game purchases and the slow release of new content, issues highlighted further by the release of Marvel Rivals. Many loyal players who have invested in Overwatch 2 are starting to feel the pressure of the competition. Marvel’s new game recently stole the show on Twitch, surpassing Overwatch 2 in viewership, and players aren’t impressed with Blizzard’s attempts to boost those numbers.
Earlier this year, Overwatch 2 introduced the “Cyber DJ” Lucio skin, priced at 2,800 Overwatch Coins. Shortly after, they announced it would be free via Twitch Drops, leaving those who spent their hard-earned money feeling slighted. Offering skins through Twitch Drops is a common practice, but doing so just after a paid release didn’t sit right with the community. Fans expected the usual flow of content through these promotional avenues, but the timing was off this time, causing a stir.
The reaction was immediate: Reddit and Blizzard forums saw a surge of complaints, with players labeling the decision as unfair and demanding refunds. This wasn’t the first time such an issue occurred—Blizzard had previously refunded players for a Mercy skin after its status changed. The Lucio skin debacle, however, happened in less than a day, contrasting with the whole month of exclusivity the Mercy skin had before becoming free. Fans were quick to highlight problems with the game’s store, such as poorly curated limited-time offers.
Overwatch 2 seems to be in a tough spot, struggling to keep up with its competitors like Marvel Rivals, who have been more aggressive with new hero releases. Blizzard has yet to make a statement addressing the community’s concerns, but as of now, the situation doesn’t look favorable for Overwatch 2.
