Sunderfolk, the highly anticipated co-op tactical adventure that embraces the spirit of tabletop gaming, is marking its debut on consoles and PC come April 23. The exciting news was revealed by developer Secret Door and publisher Dreamhaven. For those eager to get a sneak peek, a demo is accessible from March 25 to April 7 through Nvidia’s GeForce Now streaming service, giving players an opportunity to explore the game first-hand.
This marks Secret Door’s maiden venture, drawing inspiration from beloved tabletop giants such as Gloomhaven and Dungeons & Dragons. Using a creative twist, Sunderfolk invites you to use your smart devices as controllers, reminiscent of the style seen in Jackbox games. Designed for one to four players, the game plays out on a big screen like a TV or monitor, while the action unfolds on a PC or console. Users interact through a specially created app, available for free on both Android and iOS platforms.
The team at Secret Door is driven by a passion to unite players, aiming to bypass the often daunting learning curves and setup complexities of traditional tabletop games. “We want Sunderfolk to harness modern technology to make game nights enjoyable for everyone,” shared Chris Sigaty, the studio head at Secret Door, who boasts experience in StarCraft and Warcraft development.
In this immersive world, players can step into the shoes of one of six anthropomorphic heroes. Choose from the mystical Arcanist, musical Bard, fierce Berserker, fiery Pyromancer, sharp-eyed Ranger, or stealthy Rogue. Each hero plays a unique strategic role armed with specific abilities and a chance for customization with different weapons, armor, trinkets, and skills. The game employs a card system for character abilities. As you venture deeper, you can tweak and build your skill card deck, making for a diverse and balanced team. From my hands-on experience, Sunderfolk is effortlessly engaging, offering a truly enjoyable social gaming experience.
Come April 23, you’ll find Sunderfolk on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store), and Xbox Series X, priced at $49.99.
On the same day they dropped the news about Sunderfolk, Dreamhaven and their internal studio, Moonshot Games, announced a new project called Wildgate. This one’s a crew-based first-person shooter that promises action-packed ship combat.
In more announcements from Tuesday, Dreamhaven also shared plans to publish Mechabellum, a competitive auto battler already available on Steam. Together with Game River, they launched a Premium Edition, packed with 18 exclusive skins, unique avatars, and special emoticons, all for $29.99.
Lastly, for fans eagerly following FuzzyBot’s action-RPG, Lynked: Banner of the Spark, mark May 22 on your calendar. That’s when it will leave Early Access with its 1.0 release. The game will be available for PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, priced at $24.99.
