Rumor has it that Ubisoft, a major player in the French gaming industry, is crafting a new battle royale game that aims to compete head-on with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this new project, known by the codename Scout, has drawn quite a few parallels to Respawn and EA’s popular title, Apex Legends. In fact, the similarities run so deep that early artwork for this new game once mirrored that of its predecessor. It’s been noted that the game features characters reminiscent of those in Apex Legends, and it’s been under development for quite some time.
The strategy appears to be clear: Ubisoft is betting that it can attract players from Apex Legends, especially considering that Electronic Arts has disclosed a financial dip for its flagship game.
An industry insider shared, “The aim seems to be taking advantage of the dip in Apex’s player numbers. Ubisoft execs see an opportunity to introduce another hero-based battle royale.”
This isn’t the first time Ubisoft has ventured into the realm of free-to-play battle royales. The company launched Hyperscape in 2020, although that effort didn’t last long, closing down a mere 18 months after it launched. The news about Scout surfaces shortly after Ubisoft decided to end its free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by late 2024.
In the meantime, fans of Apex Legends have something to look forward to, as a revamped 2.0 version is expected to hit the scene sometime after April 2026.
