Blade Chimera, developed by PLAYISM, Team Ladybug, and WSS Playground, delivers an exceptional Metroidvania experience on the Nintendo Switch. This game is one you shouldn’t miss, and I’ll explain why in this review.
In Blade Chimera, you step into the shoes of Shin, a demon hunter grappling with amnesia. Surprisingly, you’re accompanied by Lux, a demon capable of transforming into a sword, a curious partnership given your demon-hunting profession. Lux proves to be an invaluable ally, offering not only offensive and defensive capabilities but also acting as a platform to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. She becomes indispensable as you traverse the cyberpunk landscape of Osaka.
Starting up the game thrusts you into immediate action. Shin is controlled with either the left analog stick or the D-pad, jumping with the A button and engaging in combat via the B button. The Y button activates a secondary attack based on your equipped item. For dodging incoming blows, you’ll rely on the L button, while equipped skills are used with the R button, at the cost of some MP.
Lux’s abilities are accessed using the X button. Whether attacking, forming a protective barrier, transforming into objects, or assisting in platforming by becoming a makeshift platform or grappling hook, Lux provides strategic options. Taking down foes with her aid also helps in recovering health, which is crucial in prolonged battles.
As you battle through demons and challenging bosses, you earn experience points. These points accumulate, allowing you to level up, enhancing your attack strength and defense. Don’t forget to scout each room thoroughly for special items that can expand your maximum HP and MP.
Each enemy defeated also yields money, which can be spent on various items to assist you on your journey. From life-restoring elixirs and MP-regenerating drinks to cures for status effects, the shop offers an array of helpful goods. You can also upgrade your weapons or acquire new gear, with the option to sell unwanted items for additional funds. Need more cash? Check in at HQ for side missions to pad your wallet.
Leveling up awards Skill Points that can be spent in the menu’s Unlock Skills section, essential for progressing in true Metroidvania fashion. Whether it’s the Air Dash for dodging and bridging wider gaps or a double jump for reaching new heights, these skills are key to unlocking new areas.
Blade Chimera is a must-play Metroidvania on the Nintendo Switch, where you join Shin, an amnesiac demon hunter, and his dynamic demon ally Lux. Despite the odd pairing, Lux’s versatility in combat and exploration makes her an asset in the cyberpunk world of Osaka.
Always take down every adversary in your path. Doing so not only levels you up and enriches your wallet but might also net you valuable item drops. From simple healing candies to devastating weapons, there’s plenty to discover. I happened upon a Chakram from an Amenbozu, an upgrade substantially stronger than my previous weapons, which was a game-changer. Priced at $19.99, Blade Chimera is available now on the Nintendo Switch.
