The PlayStation 5, often hailed as an outstanding console, does come with a few hiccups. Back in 2023, there were concerns about the original models potentially facing damage when positioned vertically, sparking worries over liquid metal leaks. Fast forward to today, Sony has announced advancements in the PS5 Pro’s liquid metal cooling system.
In a recent update on the PlayStation Blog, Shinya Tsuchida, the lead for Mechanical Design on the PS5 Pro, and Shinya Hiromitsu, who leads Electrical Design, revealed insights from their teardown of the upgraded console. They delved into the design choices and how they have enhanced upon the original model. A key focus was the liquid metal cooling, which, while following the original concept, has been tweaked for better performance.
“We’ve dedicated substantial time to researching insulation during the initial PS5 design phase,” Tsuchida shared. “The PS5 Pro maintains the core structure, but we’ve introduced fine grooves where the liquid metal rests. This adjustment ensures a more consistent cooling effect. Recognizing that semiconductor technology would progress and require higher density pointed to the necessity of liquid metal, which proved essential for the PS5 Pro’s design.”
The PS5 Pro doesn’t just stop there with its technical enhancements. It boasts additional heat pipes, integrated Wi-Fi 7 capabilities, an upgraded fan, and more. For PlayStation enthusiasts wanting the full scoop, the detailed interview is a must-read.
Now available for purchase, the PS5 Pro is ready to enhance your gaming experience. Its lineup includes several games optimized to take full advantage of the upgraded hardware, delivering superior performance and visuals courtesy of its AI-driven upscaling technology, PSSR.
