Valve is taking steps to keep gamers in the loop about the status of Early Access games on Steam, introducing a new feature that flags titles lacking updates for over a year.
The folks at SteamDB uncovered this update, which presents a notification at the top of the Early Access developer Q&A section. This alert informs potential buyers about when the game was last given some TLC by its creators.
Additionally, Valve has rolled out updates to Steamworks to explain this feature. Here’s how they put it: “If it’s been more than 12 months since a game’s developers have released an update and posted about it, Steam will place a warning on the store page. This note appears just above the Developer Questionnaire, alerting players if the game hasn’t seen any action in a while.”
The warning pops up under two specific conditions:
1. It’s been over a year since the game’s build was assigned to the ‘default’ branch in Steamworks.
2. More than a year has passed since the developer last posted an ‘update’ type event, which could be a Major Update, Regular Update, or even Patch Notes.
The Early Access section on Steam historically has seen its fair share of projects ultimately abandoned by their developers, leaving players in the lurch. This new feature is Valve’s way of ensuring these instances are clearly highlighted, helping gamers make more informed decisions.
