Valve hasn’t yet launched a new version of the Steam Deck, but they’re keeping things exciting with a fresh release on the horizon: a limited edition Steam Deck OLED in a sleek white finish.
This new model, named the “Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White,” sports the same specs as the 1TB model currently available. However, it comes with a slight price bump to $679, which is $30 more. The exciting news is that it’s hitting the shelves next week, specifically on Monday, November 18.
What sets the Limited Edition White Deck apart, aside from its new color scheme of white and gray, is that it includes a matching white carrying case and a microfiber cleaning cloth.
Valve has experimented with colors previously, having brought out a smoky translucent edition of the Steam Deck OLED, which sold out fast, despite some issues with minor cracks. This time, Valve assures us the white Deck will be available everywhere that the Steam Deck is sold—this includes the United States, Canada, UK, Europe, and lately, Australia. Plus, it’s making its way to Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea through Komodo, their partner. Valve plans to give each region a proportionate allocation of stock.
To thwart scalpers, Valve has set a purchase limit of one white Steam Deck per account, and you’ll need at least one previous purchase on your Steam account before November 2024 to be eligible.
In a press release, Valve shared their thoughts on the limited edition’s release, saying it’s a way to gauge interest and inform future color options: “We’re curious to see what the response is, and will use what we learn to inform future decisions about any potential new color variants down the line.”
For those who crave the white color but don’t feel like snagging the limited edition, there are alternatives. Companies like Jsaux and dbrand offer backplates or skins to customize your Steam Deck. But if you’re keen to get the official white version, you’ll have to act before stocks deplete.
Additionally, Valve hinted at the future of the Deck, mentioning that besides new colors and ongoing software updates, they’re developing new aspects of the Steam Deck and other hardware plans.
From what I’ve seen in the photos, the new white Deck has a nostalgic vibe reminiscent of the Wii U mixed with the classic iPod design. It might just entice current Deck owners to consider snapping up a new one.
